Today I was asked where we could go to lunch that is nearby and not somewhere on the usual rotation of lunch spots. You’d be surprised at how hard it is to think of somewhere good to eat that is both nearby, and yet not somewhere you regularly go. After a couple of minutes of hard thought and kicking around a few places, The Gaf in Waldo was thrown out there. Immediately agreed upon we ventured over for lunch at a place considered by many to be a hidden gem of the Waldo area.
With a little bite in the air on this crisp fall-like day there was talk of comfort foods. This got me perusing the menu and noticing things like the Chili, Irish Beef Stew, Corned Beef & Cabbage, & Chicken Pot Pie among other delicious looking menu items before deciding to go with the Shepard’s Pie. Ground beef and veggies smothered in gravy and topped with mashed potatoes before being baked this looked like the perfect choice on this cool fall day.
Our meals arrived and we dug in. The standout part of this dish was the gravy. Thick, rich, and well-seasoned the gravy provided a wonderful base for the dish. While the rest of the plate was tasty, the gravy went to great lengths to cover up some slight disappointments. The carrots were a little on the mushy side, the mashed potatoes were short on salt, and I thought there could have been a little more meat. All in all it was a good dish and with a few minor adjustments could be something that you’d regularly crave. As a final note, on this particular day the special was corned beef and cabbage. Sampling it, this was a dish that would be worth ordering again for sure.
