 Pomegranate Inspired Drinks
Out with some friends a couple of weeks ago I had a pomegranate flavored cocktail for the first time in recent memory.  When used to flavor a drink, pomegranate adds amazing flavor to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  This crisp flavor of this fruit can be both sweet and tart within the same berry.  In the last 10 years pomegranate juice has become widely available in the United States and recently has become a popular juice to mix in drinks.  Given it’s flavor profile it makes for a perfect warm weather beverage addition.  With that in mind I thought I’d share a couple of recipes to make fantastic pomegranate drinks.

Pomegranate Punch (Non-Alcoholic)

4-5 ounces chilled ginger ale or ginger beer

1/2 ounce pomegranate syrup

Crushed Ice

5-7 pomegranate seeds

Twist of a Lime

Combine ginger ale/beer, syrup, and ice in a cocktail shaker.  Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass either neat/up or pour over crushed ice if you prefer it on the rocks.  Top with the lime twist and pomegranate seeds and enjoy.

Perfect Pomegranate  Cocktail

2 cups pomegranate juice

1 1/2 cups vodka

1 cup grenadine

1 cup fresh blood orange juice (about 2 blood oranges)

1/2 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)

Combine all recipes in a pitcher, stir well and serve over ice with lime wedge or blood orange twist as garnish.

Pomegranate Mimosa

2 cups chilled pomegranate juice

1 cup chilled fresh squeezed orange juice

1/2 cup orange flavored liqueur (preferably Cointreau)

1 bottle (750ml) of chilled Champagne (substitute non-alcoholic sparkling cider if you’d like)

Combine juices and liqueur in a pitcher and stir well.  Slowly add champagne and mix slowly.  Pour and serve.  Makes 7-10 drinks.

Pomegranate Margarita

4 ounces white tequila

2 ounces Triple Sec

1/2 cup pomegranate juice

1 lime: juiced

Lime Wedges

Club Soda

Pour salt onto a plate or shallow dish. With a lime wedge rub along the rim of a glass and dip glasses upside down to salt the rim. Fill glasses with ice. In a cocktail shaker with ice place the tequila, triple sec, pomegranate juice, and lime juice. Pour into the salt-rimmed glasses and top off with club soda.  Garnish with a lime wedge, if desired.
