Beating the Heat with Great Summertime Cocktails

The heat has really been dialed up lately here in the Midwest, and that means we are officially in the dog days of summer.  What this also means is that it’s time to cool down and quench your thirst with great summertime cocktails.  In our opinion there are a few things that really define a tremendous summertime cocktail.  First, and most importantly a warm weather drink needs to be crisp and refreshing while incorporating the flavors of the season.  After that you are looking for something that is better and better the colder it is.  Some drinks are better served slightly chilled, or at room temperature and this typically is not the hallmark of a great hot weather drink.  Without any further adieu, let’s look at a few cocktails that will really whet your whistle this summer.

Part I of this series focuses on the wildly popular sweet tea vodka.  This flavored type of vodka has really only come to be at the forefront of the public mindset in the last few years, and it leaves us wondering where it has been our whole life.  So enjoy a couple of great recipes incorporating sweet tea vodka.  If you have one of your own, please share it, we are always looking for ways to enjoy this wonderful summertime spirit.

Sweet Tea Vodka & Fresh Squeezed Lemonade

This is a simple drink that can hit the spot like none other on a hot day.  If you are new to the sweet tea vodka movement, there are quickly becoming more and more choices at your local liquor store.  My personal favorites are Jeremiah Weed and Firefly.  Others are pretty good, but I would suggest staying away from the gut rot cheapest one you can find.  You’ll probably regret it. This is the adult version of the Arnold Palmer and on a hot summer day not much beats it.

          Sweet Tea Vodka

          1 Cup Sugar

          1 Cup Water

1 Cup Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

3 to 4 Cups water to dilute

Making the Lemonade:

Make a simple syrup by heating 1 cup of water to a simmer.  Stir in the sugar until it completely dissolves.

Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice to the simple syrup, stir well, and pour into a pitcher.

Add in 3 to 4 cups of cold water based on how strong you like your lemonade.  Refrigerate 30 to 40 minutes.  If lemonade is too sweet, add a little more lemon juice till you get to your perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Making the Cocktail:

In a highball glass mix 1 part sweet tea vodka and 1 part of your fresh lemonade over ice.  Garnish with a lemon wedge or a mint leaf.  Serve and enjoy!

Sweet Tea Swing

A drink enjoyed by legendary drinker and golfer John Daly, this is a simple cocktail enjoyed after dinner on the front porch, back patio, or in the clubhouse after a round on the links.

          2.5 ounces Sweet Tea Vodka

          1.5 ounces Limoncello Liqueur

Making the Cocktail:

Combine the Sweet Tea Vodka and Limoncello in a cocktail shaker.  Shake well and serve on the rocks in a lowball glass with a lemon twist.  This cocktail drinks better when it sits in the ice for a little while and chills even more.
