Marv’s Deli – A Delicious Delicatessen

As we’ve now made our way through the first few days of Restaurant Week 2014, I am thrilled to see all of the people tweeting and posting about places they are trying and the experiences they are having.  A few days before Restaurant Week got underway, we had the opportunity to stop into an unassuming establishment in Leawood that many may not be familiar with.  When we finished up our meal, I made a pact with myself to make sure more of Kansas City knows about this new little gem in our dining scene.

Steve Kerner opened Marv’s Deli in 2012 as a homage to his farther Marv.  Growing up in Chicago, Marv would take Steve and his sister to local North Shore delis.  Growing up in that scene gave Steve an appreciation for quality meats and other traditional delicatessen fare.  As he grew up eating and working in restaurants, Steve always knew one day he’d open his own place that would serve the same quality food he’d grown up on.  Now he has the chance to pass that same happiness along to all of us.

Marv’s imports some of the best meats from some of the most historical deli meat purveyors across the country.   The corned beef, pastrami, brisket and chopped liver are some of the best you will find in our city.  I was fortunate enough to try the over and under as well as their pastrami Rueben.   The Over and Under features corned beef and brisket with Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on a rye roll.  I’ve now told no less than 10 people to make sure they try it the next time they are in.

Oh and don’t forget about their donuts.  Marv’s is now modernizing the donut with some twists on classic pairings as well as some out of the box ideas.  If you like sweets then you’ll find a donut that will suit your fancy.

Marv’s may be fairly new to the Kansas City dining and deli scene, but if they keep serving up this high quality traditional deli fare coupled with some of their more creative offerings then it won’t be long before the whole city knows Steve’s story.
