One time I heard a joke about Mexican cuisine.  It was something about how all Mexican food is just a tortilla, beans, meat, cheese, and a canned sauce / salsa.   While this joke may actually hold quite a bit of truth for your average Mexican restaurant, at Zócalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria on the Country Club Plaza this could not be further from the truth.

Since its opening in 2012, Zócalo has treated diners to fresh traditional Mexican cuisine with a twist.  Named after the main plaza at the heart of the cultural center in many Mexican cities, a Zócalo is a gathering place for social gatherings and festivities.  Serving superior food and hand-crafted cocktails, our very own Zócalo has become just that on the Plaza.

The food here focuses on fresh ingredients in creating a menu that looks nothing like the “traditional” Mexican restaurant American’s have become accustomed to.  Dishes like the Chile Rubbed Duck Breast, Mole Chorizo and Short Rib, Adobo-Seared Diver Scallops, and Cilantro Crusted Sea bass are just a few of the items that will wow you at Zócalo.  For Restaurant Week 2014 they are also offering a Scallop Ceviche that will transport you right down to a little fishing village where the seafood is so fresh it was in the water yesterday.  During the winter months, the Chicken Tortilla Soup is a soul-warming combination of roasted corn, spicy tomato broth, crème, and shredded chicken thickened with tortilla chips.  It has a bit of heat to it, but when it’s freezing outside this will warm you all the way through.

Even though Zócalo serves what is my favorite Mexican cuisine in Kansas City, you would only be getting half the dining experience if you don’t take a look at the drink menu.  Their hand-crafted cocktails feature traditionals like your house margaritas, but also incorporate drinks like the Jalapeño Cooler, Mexican Mule, and Blueberry Mojito to add a contemporary twist to the list.  The Jalapeño Cooler consists of cucumber infused tequila, agave, strawberry-jalapeño shrub and is topped with a splash of Moscato.  It’s both sweet and spicy at the same time.  If you aren’t sure which one tickles your fancy, try a couple different ones.

As the name Zócalo suggests a social gathering place in Mexican culture for friends to come together for a great meal and delicious drinks, Zócalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria on the Plaza has very much become that in Kansas City.
