On a recent chilly winter evening I decided I wanted a nice cocktail to sip on while sitting in front of the fire and catching up on some TV shows. Something like a great hot chocolate with a flavored liquor or warm apple cider with Hot Damn sounded great. Problem was that I didn’t have any cocoa powder or apple cider and so after rummaging around in the liquor cabinet and looking through my ever- present copy of The Craft of the Cocktail by Dale Degroff I got some ideas, and while taking inspiration from this great reference guide, I gave the drink my own personal twist. I was quite pleased with how things turned out and think you won’t be disappointed either.
So, without further adieu here is my version of a hot buttery rum cocktail:
In a tea kettle, or microwave safe mixing cup heat approximately 1 1/2 – 2 cups of water up to boiling. While heating water, place brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon stick (if available) in your favorite mug. When water is boiling, pour into mug filling it approximately 3/4 full. Stir to dissolve butter and brown sugar and then add rum and stir to incorporate. Sprinkle nutmeg over the top to garnish. Drink and enjoy!
If you don’t have a cinnamon stick available, then you can add a pinch of ground cinnamon in along with the brown sugar and butter. If you do have a cinnamon stick available then you can re-use it a number of times in future drinks. Also, depending on the size of the mug you use, you may want to adjust the ingredient amounts slightly to suit your tastes.
